The Past & The Present
You know J & J Howe, an established, family run company offering quality removals & storage and a knowledgeable interior furnishing service both locally and nationally from our Perthshire base, Blairgowrie.
However, J & J Howe didn’t begin this way, originally a saddlers established in 1871 by our current directors’ great, great grandparents (and my great, great, great grandparents) my ancestors painstakingly created hand crafted leather work using the attention to detail and care still valued to us to this day. This continued through until after the war when we first diversified, offering furniture and cabinet making.
J & J Howe has explored many ventures over the years but it was on re-opening after the second world war where the services offered began to mirror more closely how you would identify us today. My great grandfather returned from serving in the Air Forces and, having been trained as an auctioneer and valuator pre-war, opened the first Howe’s auction room in Alyth.
Continuing to service the community with quality furniture and upholstery services, the Blairgowrie shop we operate from today initially opened in 1951 and was ran by my grandparents. While covering the community’s needs to furnish and decorate their homes we also made it possible to transport belongings with the flourishing removal side of the company. Having purchased the first van in 1933, we were now operating with a fleet of four vehicles and seventeen staff – which is not dissimilar to today’s numbers.
Fast forward to the present and although some things have changed – we no longer run our own auctions, instead acting as agents, and made the decision some years back to focus our attention on supplying made to measure flooring and window coverings – the basic template remains. A small family run, community focused, organisation servicing the local area with trustworthy removals, honest valuations, and quality interior furnishings.
